University Sports Highlights Across Nigerian Campuses August 2026
University sports activities continued across Nigerian campuses in August 2026, with institutions and student leaders organising football competitions, esports tournaments, fitness initiatives, and other sporting activities that provided students with opportunities for competition, participation, and campus engagement.
At Federal University Otuoke FUO, the Freshers' Cup kicked off on 22 June 2026, providing new students with an opportunity to participate in football and connect through campus sport. The university also held the 2026 FYB Inter Faculty Football Competition from 8 to 18 August, featuring Science, Social Science, and Humanities in Group A, and Management, Education, and Engineering in Group B. The group stage ran from 8 to 15 August, followed by the semi finals on 17 August and the final on 18 August at the Sand Pitch, Main Campus.
At the National Association of Nigerian Students NANS, the NANS 7KM Unity Walk for Progress, Walk for Life, Not Drugs, held on 24 August 2026 in Ebonyi State, promoted healthy living, unity, discipline, and a drug free society. The initiative was led by NANS President Dist. Comr. Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, National Director of Sports Comr. Ojumoola Miracle Timileyin, and NANS Senate President Dist. Sen. Ibeabuchi Moses Onyia, bringing students together around the message of choosing life, health, and sport over substance abuse.
At Ambrose Alli University AAU, Ekpoma, the All Departmental Cup marked the first tournament of its kind in the university's history, bringing together 18 departmental teams from across the institution. Organised by Comrade Alfred Moses, the competition began on 24 August 2026 and runs until 12 September 2026, with teams representing BAMSSA, Engineering, Arts, Environmental Sciences, SOSSAN, Education, Agriculture, Life Sciences, and Physical Sciences. The participating departments are Physiology, Civil Engineering, Mass Communication, Architecture, Psychology, English, Electrical Engineering, Guidance and Counselling, Mechanical Engineering, Anatomy, Business Education, Curriculum and Instruction, Agricultural Economics and Extension, Political Science, History and International Studies, Microbiology, Computer Science, and Building. The competition is structured around a group stage and knockout format, with the Round of 16 taking place on 31 August.
At Federal University Lokoja, the 2026 SUG Games concluded with the Closing Ceremony and Football Final Matches on 26 August 2026 at the Felele Campus Stadium. Computer Science faced Public Administration in the male final, while ICH faced Zoology in the female final, bringing the university's 2026 SUG Games to a close.
At the University of Calabar, preparations are underway for the Malabor Champions League, organised by the Students Union Government through the Office of the Director of Sports. The football competition is set to bring students together for another campus sporting contest.
At Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology BOUESTI, the BOUESTI Sport Festival 2026 continued with sporting activities celebrating the creativity and culture of Ikere Kingdom among students. On 18 August, BOUESTI FC played FUOYE Dazzlers FC in a pre season fixture at the BOUESTI Sports Complex, with the match ending 2 to 2. Adamolekun Ayomide and Boluwatife Abiodun Raheem scored for FUOYE Dazzlers, as the team continued preparations for the school games under Head Coach Blessing Ayodeji O.
At the University of Abuja UNIABUJA, the Office of the SUG Director of Sports announced several student sporting and gaming initiatives. The UNIABUJA eFootball Mobile Tournament will feature 32 players across five rounds, with ₦20,000 for the champion, ₦10,000 for the first runner up, and ₦5,000 for the second runner up. The Call of Duty Mobile Tournament, scheduled for 30 August 2026, will feature 25 teams competing for ₦30,000, ₦20,000, and ₦10,000 for the top three positions. The university also introduced a Premium Fantasy League for the 2026/2027 English Premier League season, offering a monthly prize for the leading team and a University of Abuja Sports Ambassador opportunity.
These activities reflect the continued development of university sports across Nigeria, with campuses providing more opportunities for competitive sport, student participation, fitness, esports, leadership, and community engagement.
