Nigeria Heads to Cairo: Nigerian Universities Are Set for The 12th FASU Games
Nigeria is set to compete at the 12th Federation of Africa University Sports FASU Games, taking place from 8 to 16 September 2026 in Cairo, Egypt, with Nigerian universities preparing to represent the country on the continental stage. The Games will bring together 81 universities from 17 African countries and around 2,000 student athletes and officials, competing across 18 sporting disciplines.
Nigerian universities heading to Cairo include Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), Lagos State University (LASU), Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), and the University of Jos (UNIJOS) Their participation adds to Nigeria's growing presence within African university sports.
Nigeria's position in continental university sport has been strengthened by several recent developments, including:
Strong FASU performances: At the 11th FASU Games in Lagos in 2024, hosted by the University of Lagos UNILAG and Lagos State University LASU, Nigerian universities recorded strong medal performances, with LASU finishing second overall and UNILAG third.
Hosting continental competitions: The University of Ibadan hosted the 8th FASU Afro Varsity 3x3 Basketball Championship in 2026, bringing universities from six African countries to Nigeria and further establishing the country as a host for continental university sport.
Continued regional hosting: Nigeria will host the 15th West African University Games WAUG at Obafemi Awolowo University OAU, Ile Ife, from 2 to 12 October 2026, bringing universities from across West Africa together for competition in 17 sports.
With these developments providing a strong platform for Nigerian university sport, UNIZIK, LAUTECH, LASUED, UNIJOS and other Nigerian representatives will head to Cairo with an opportunity to compete for continental honours and further strengthen Nigeria's presence in African university sports.
