IDUS Nigeria 2026: 10 Years, 10 Kilometres And A Global Celebration Of University Sport
The 10th anniversary of the International Day of University Sport (IDUS) brought university communities together across the world on 20 September 2026, with this year's celebration centred on the global 10 Years, 10 Kilometres movement led by the International University Sports Federation (FISU).
Since its establishment, IDUS has provided a platform for universities and their communities to connect through sport, physical activity and healthy living. For its 10th anniversary, FISU encouraged universities and sports organisations worldwide to organise 10 kilometre activities, document their participation and contribute to a shared global celebration.
The anniversary generated significant engagement across social media, with more than 100,000 reported hashtag reposts, shares and uses across the #IDUS2026 and #IDUS conversations, reflecting the widespread digital participation and visibility surrounding the milestone.
A Global Movement
Universities and university sports organisations across Africa, Europe, Asia, Oceania and the Americas joined the celebration through local activities. FISU's global movement encouraged participants to run, walk and take part in physical activities while sharing their experiences online and contributing their completed kilometres.
With IDUS activities involving thousands of universities across more than 150 countries and five continents, the anniversary continued to highlight the role of university sport in promoting physical activity, wellbeing, inclusion and community engagement.
Nigeria Joins The Celebration
In Nigeria, the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) marked the anniversary through the IDUS Nigeria 10KM Challenge, under the theme "One University Community. Run Together. Grow Together."
The nationwide initiative invited students, academic and non teaching staff, alumni, surrounding communities and persons with disabilities to participate through running, walking or a combination of both. Activities were tracked through Strava, with an adapted distance of 3 to 5 kilometres available for persons with disabilities.
The challenge also encouraged institutional participation through recognition categories such as Highest Participation, Greatest Total Distance, Most Active Faculty, Best Social Media Engagement, Greenest University, Most Active Students, Most Active Alumni and Best Overall University. Participants who completed the challenge were eligible for digital recognition, including a race bib, finisher certificate and badge.
Universities and student sports communities across the country also came out to mark the occasion. Niger Delta University (NDU) in Bayelsa State, the University of Benin (UNIBEN) and the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) participated in the celebration. An activity coordinated by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Director of Sports in Ebonyi State also brought participants together in recognition of the global milestone.
Legacy54 Sports Takes IDUS Beyond The Run
In Benin City, Legacy54 Sports, founded by Victor Oluwaseun Olabisi, organised its own celebration of the 10th anniversary, bringing university students together for an experience that extended beyond the 10 kilometre run.
The event combined running with painting, games, food, conversations and opportunities for participants to connect. The initiative created a space where sport, art, creativity and community came together, offering students a range of ways to participate in the celebration.
Legacy54 Sports acknowledged the support of its partners, Jollof Central, Moonlight Umbrella Art Gallery and the Red Cross Society, alongside the students and other participants who contributed to the event.
The initiative reflected Legacy54 Sports' aim of creating experiences around sport that bring people together and build connections beyond individual events. Its celebration demonstrated how IDUS can provide a platform for organisations to encourage participation through different forms of physical, artistic and social engagement.
Beyond The 10 Kilometres
NUGA's wider 2026 IDUS programme extended beyond the physical activity challenge, incorporating activities focused on leadership, volunteerism, dialogue and campus sport.
The International Volunteering at Sports Events session, held on 21 September, brought together university sports stakeholders and young leaders to explore volunteering, event management, leadership and opportunities within international sport. These activities reinforced the wider role of university sport in supporting student development, inclusion, communication and institutional collaboration.
Across Nigeria, the different forms of participation, from campus activities and community walks to creative events and digital engagement, reflected the many ways universities and organisations can contribute to the IDUS movement.
Ten Years Of Moving Together
A decade after IDUS was established, the 2026 anniversary provided an opportunity for university communities to celebrate the connections created through sport and physical activity. From the global 10 kilometre movement to campus activities and community led initiatives, the celebration highlighted the shared value of participation, wellbeing and unity.
In Nigeria, NUGA, universities, student sports communities and independent initiatives such as Legacy54 Sports contributed to a celebration that extended beyond competition, bringing people together through movement, creativity and shared experiences.
10 Years. 10 Kilometres. One University Community. Run Together. Grow Together.
