WAUG 2026: OAU Readies for Games as Accreditation Enters Final Stage

With just one day to go before the 15th West African University Games (WAUG) 2026, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, is preparing to welcome student-athletes and sports officials from across the sub-region for the competition scheduled to hold from 2 to 12 October.

The Games are expected to attract more than 3,500 athletes and officials from 16 West African countries, with 17 sporting disciplines, including athletics, football, basketball, volleyball, swimming, table tennis and e-sports. The event will also feature the Ori Olokun head as its mascot and logo, reflecting the cultural heritage of Ile-Ife and its significance in Yoruba history.

Speaking in an interview with ALLINEWS on 29 September, West African University Games Assistant Secretary General, Prof. Boluwaji G. Jayesimi, disclosed that about 50 universities had expressed interest in participating in the Games. He explained that strict accreditation measures are being enforced to ensure that only eligible student-athletes compete, in line with the requirements of the Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU) and the International University Sports Federation (FISU).

Prof. Jayesimi stated that athletes must be within the required age bracket of 17 to 25 years and provide documents verifying their student status, including admission letters, evidence of school fees payment and current academic registration. The accreditation process is being conducted largely remotely, with the final deadline set for 2 October, the expected arrival date of participating contingents.

He also expressed confidence in OAU's readiness to host the Games, noting that arrangements have been made for the accommodation and transportation of athletes and officials. The opening ceremony is expected to take place at 4 p.m. on Saturday, 3 October, with the FASU President also expected to attend.

The 2026 edition marks OAU's return as host after previously staging the Games in 1975. Beyond the competition, WAUG continues to provide a platform for university athletes to develop their abilities, gain regional exposure and strengthen cooperation among institutions across West Africa. Prof. Jayesimi encouraged aspiring participants to prioritise their education and gain admission into universities, emphasising that WAUG is committed to promoting genuine university talent.
