University Sports Highlights Across Nigerian Campuses September 2026

University sports activities continued across Nigerian campuses in September 2026, with student unions, sports directorates, and student leaders organising football competitions, campus games, fitness initiatives, and other sporting activities that encouraged participation, competition, and community engagement.

At Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology (BOUESTI), the university announced the BOUESTI Marathon 2026, organised by the Office of the SUG Director of Sports in collaboration with Team Ifhy. The marathon took place on Tuesday, 8 September, with participants meeting at the Garage, Town Hall, Akure Park, at 6:00 a.m. The event featured prizes and medals, promoting fitness and student participation through athletics.

At the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), the Blazers Olympics Cup 0.2 reached its final matches, with the competition bringing together nine teams in a programme dedicated to late student leaders and sports officials. The finals featured the Education Girls team against Mass Communication Girls at 8:00 a.m., followed by the Engineering Boys team against Mass Communication Boys at 9:00 a.m. Both matches were scheduled to take place at the ETF Field, marking the conclusion of the campus competition.

At Federal University Otuoke (FUO), the Students' Union Government announced the 2026/2027 VC/SUG Cup and Olympic Games, bringing together students and faculty members across several sporting and recreational events. The programme includes football, volleyball, basketball, table tennis, tug of war, discus, javelin, shot put, high jump, long jump, track events, marathon racing, chess, and Scrabble. The initiative is aimed at promoting participation, unity, and sporting engagement across the university community.

At Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), the Student Union Government, through the Office of the Sports Director, announced the SUG Games 2026, themed "Legacy" and guided by the message, "Legends Aren't Born, They're Remembered." The games draw was scheduled to take place on a Sunday at 5:00 p.m., with a live broadcast on YouTube. The event forms part of the university's student sports programme, bringing teams together ahead of the competition.

At Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), preparations began for the 2026/2027 FUOYE Champions League, organised by the Students' Union Government. The competition is set to feature 36 teams across three campuses, with one team emerging as champion. The tournament will bring together student teams from Oye, Ikole, and Ido, providing a platform for campus football rivalry and participation under the theme of bringing the university community together through football. FUOYE Dazzlers also featured in the opening match of the Oye Local Government Football League, where they were scheduled to face Surprise FC at the FUOYE Sports Complex, with kick-off set for 1:00 p.m. The fixture marked the start of the local league and provided an opportunity for the university's football team to compete beyond campus.

At Federal University Lokoja (FUL), the Directorate of Sports organised the 2026 Inter-Faculty Football Competition, with the VC's Cup finals held on Thursday, 17 September, at the university's Football Pitch, Felele Campus. The female final featured the Faculty of Life Sciences against the Faculty of Arts, while the male final brought together the Faculty of Management and the Faculty of Physical Sciences. The competition provided an opportunity for students to represent their faculties and compete for the university title.

At the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), the Office of the Director of Sports, in collaboration with the International Day of University Sport (IDUS), organised the IDUS Nigeria 10KM Challenge on 20 September 2026. Held at the Basketball and Volleyball Court at 2:00 p.m., the event followed the theme "One Global Movement" and encouraged participants to run, walk, complete 10 kilometres, and track their activity using Strava. Teams were required to attend in their jerseys as part of the university's participation in the global celebration of university sport.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) also marked IDUS 2026 through the IDUS Nigeria 10KM Challenge, highlighting the role of sport in promoting unity, discipline, resilience, and healthy living among students. In a message signed by Chief Media Head Officer to the NANS Director of Sports, Comr. Kukuruku Avwerosuo Believe, students, SUG presidents, sports directors, and student-athletes were encouraged to mobilise their campuses and participate. The message recognised the contribution of university sport across football, basketball, athletics, tennis, volleyball, and chess, while calling on students to celebrate their achievements both on and off the field.

Looking ahead to October, the Ikogosi Marathon announced the opening of registration for its 17.5KM Race, scheduled for 31 October 2026. The event invites runners to register and take part in the race, with information and registration available through the official Ikogosi Marathon website. The marathon provides another opportunity to promote distance running and participation in road racing.

These activities highlight the continued growth of university sports across Nigerian campuses, with student unions and sports directorates creating opportunities for competition, fitness, leadership, and community engagement. From inter-faculty football finals and campus leagues to athletics and the nationwide celebration of IDUS, the initiatives reflect the role of sport in bringing university communities together.
