Student Athlete Spotlight: Esther Oluwafikunayo Olayinka Continues to Excel in University Athletics
Esther Oluwafikunayo Olayinka of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has continued to distinguish herself in university athletics through her performances in middle-distance and long-distance events, earning recognition in this week's NUGA Student Athlete Saturday Spotlight.
A Law student and member of OAU's Spartan Athletics Team, Esther competes in the 1500m, 5000m and 10000m events. Her journey reflects her commitment to competitive athletics while pursuing her academic studies and participating in student leadership within her faculty.
Esther represented OAU at the 27th Nigerian University Games (NUGA Games), hosted by the University of Jos in 2025, where she won bronze medals in the 5000m and the 4x400m relay. These performances added to her record of achievements across inter-faculty and other intra-school competitions, through which she has continued to develop as a university athlete.
At the West African University Games (WAUG) in 2026, Esther further strengthened her medal record, winning gold in the 10000m and silver medals in both the 5000m and 1500m. Her three-medal achievement across the events highlights her versatility and continued participation in competitive university athletics.
Beyond the track, Esther remains engaged in student leadership within her faculty while maintaining good academic grades. Her experience reflects the demands of balancing the responsibilities of university education with the discipline and preparation required for competitive sport.
As a student-athlete, Esther represents the many young people across Nigerian universities who pursue academic development alongside sporting ambitions. Her journey demonstrates how university sport provides opportunities for competition, personal growth and institutional representation.
Through #SpotlightSaturday, NUGA continues to highlight the stories, achievements and experiences of student-athletes contributing to university sports across Nigeria.
