The Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) is known for its exceptional academic programs and a wide range of extracurricular activities. One of the most exciting events that take place on the FUTA campus is the Awopegba Football Tournament, which is held annually in honor and memory of the late former president of the FUTASU. The 9th edition of the Awopegba Football Tournament began on January 20th, 2023, and ended on April 9th, 2023. This year's tournament was a memorable one, as 38 departments competed for the coveted trophy. The Awopegba Football Tournament is unique in that it is played among freshmen, with each departmental team consisting of 18 players, 1 coach, and 1 assistant coach. This format ensures that the tournament is competitive and evenly matched, with all teams having an equal opportunity to emerge victorious. After weeks of intense competition, the Ecotourism and Wildlife Management (EWM) department emerged as the champions of the 9th Awopegba Football Tournament. They put up an impressive performance, winning all their matches and scoring a total of 21 goals. The Surveying and Geoformatics (SVG) department came in second place, closely followed by the Fisheries and Aquaculture Technology department, who came in third place. Apart from the exciting football matches, the Awopegba Football Tournament is also a platform for freshmen to showcase their talents and connect with their peers from other departments. It is an opportunity for them to form new friendships and networks that will be beneficial to them throughout their stay on campus. In conclusion, the 9th Awopegba Football Tournament was a resounding success, with the EWM department emerging as the deserving champions. We congratulate all the departments that participated in the tournament and look forward to an even more exciting edition next year.
