The Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) is pleased to announce that the Government of Edo State, in collaboration with the University of Benin, will be hosting the 2023 NUGA trials for athletes to the World University Games. The trials are scheduled to hold from the 8th to the 14th of May, 2023 in Benin City, Edo State. According to the Deputy Governor of Edo State, "We have the best facilities in Nigeria and we are happy to accommodate NUGA and university athletes. Edo state intends to lead sports development in Nigeria." He continued by saying, "We intend to go grassroots with our sports development, and this is a great opportunity for us to show our commitment." The Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin also expressed her delight in hosting the trials, stating that "We remain at the forefront of university sports development in Nigeria, having sent over 200 students to the NUGA Games. We believe these events go beyond competition but experiences that most students cherish from their academic years." The trials will feature 7 sports, including athletics, badminton, judo, swimming, table tennis, Taekwondo, and tennis at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin city Edo state. The event will feature athletes who performed exceptionally well at the 26th NUGA Games, as well as new athletes who will compete for their spot on the team that will represent Nigeria at the World University Games. This event presents a significant opportunity for the athletes to showcase their skills and earn a spot on the team that will represent Nigeria at the World University Games. It is also an excellent opportunity for the Government of Edo State and the University of Benin to showcase their commitment to sports development in Nigeria. NUGA remains committed to promoting sports development in Nigerian universities, and we are grateful to the Government of Edo State and the University of Benin for their support. We invite all athletes and sports enthusiasts to participate in the trials and support the development of sports in Nigeria.
