OAU Facilities Impress WAUSF, Recommend More Facility Upgrades
With just five days to go until the 17th West African Universities Games (WAUG 2026), preparations at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), the designated host of the Games, are gathering momentum as the West African University Sports Federation (WAUSF) conducts a readiness inspection of key sporting facilities.
The high powered WAUSF delegation visited OAU on Wednesday, 26 August 2026, as part of a comprehensive assessment of the university's readiness to host the Games. The inspection focused on venues scheduled to accommodate major competitions during WAUG 2026.
Welcoming the delegation on behalf of OAU were the Chairman of the WAUG Local Organising Committee, Professor E. O. Akinfala, who also serves as Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Chairman of the Sports Council, Professor Olusegun Ogunba, Director of Sports, Dr Ogunlusi, and Coach Abu, alongside other university officials.
WAUSF Assesses Key Sports Facilities
The delegation expressed satisfaction with the condition of several major sporting facilities across the university.
The basketball and football pitches received positive assessments, with the WAUSF team noting their readiness for high level competition. The tennis courts were also commended, while the swimming pool was considered to be in good shape.
The Judo room was also assessed and acknowledged to be in good structural condition, adding to the positive assessment of the facilities inspected ahead of the Games.
Final Upgrades Ahead Of The Games
While several facilities received positive feedback, the inspection also highlighted areas where further upgrades would strengthen preparations ahead of competition.
WAUSF recommended upgraded badminton poles to ensure the venue is suitable for competition. The delegation also called for intensified floodlighting in designated areas to support smooth competition and improve visibility where events require additional lighting.
The recommendations form part of the final preparations as OAU continues to put its sporting infrastructure in place for the arrival of participating universities.

With only five days remaining, anticipation is building at OAU as preparations enter the final stretch ahead of the 17th West African Universities Games.
The readiness inspection marks another important step towards the Games, with the university's sporting facilities and wider preparations coming together ahead of the opening.
