The Heartbeat of the Games: NUGA's Volunteer Network at UNIJOS 2025
The spirit of the Nigerian Universities Games Association (NUGA) continues to shine through its volunteer network, the silent force behind every successful event.
At the ongoing 27th NUGA Games, University of Jos 2025, 1000 confirmed volunteers have come together to power the Games from behind the scenes, embodying the values of teamwork, service, and leadership.
The official orientation for volunteers was held on Tuesday, October 4, during which participants, both from the host university and from other states, were warmly welcomed. Before the Games, volunteers underwent a rigorous online accreditation process, requiring the submission of essential school documents and valid student ID cards.
This meticulous procedure, coupled with a strict selection and elimination process, ensured that only articulate, proactive, and responsible individuals were chosen, qualities necessary for representing the Games, coordinating effectively, and handling travel arrangements. During the orientation, volunteers were accredited in person, assigned to various departments including Media, Protocol, Logistics, and Accommodation, and issued tags, shirts, and hostel accommodations to guarantee smooth coordination throughout the event.
Speaking during the session, Ms. Chidiebere Ezeani, Volunteer Coordinator, emphasized that the heartbeat of sports lies in its volunteers, as teamwork and service are essential to youth growth.
The NUGA Volunteer Network, sustained since 2022, has not only supported event organization but also created pathways for personal and professional development. Through hands on experience in leadership, coordination, and teamwork, many student volunteers have gone on to represent Nigeria as FISU ambassadors, connecting local sports communities with international opportunities.
Each volunteer embodies NUGA's enduring culture of service, proving that while athletes may win the medals, it is the volunteers who keep the Games alive and moving forward.
As the Opening Ceremony of the 27th NUGA Games takes place today, the 8th November 2025, the impact of these volunteers shines even brighter. From welcoming VIPs and delegates to coordinating media coverage and ensuring security checks, their seamless collaboration brings the event to life. The ceremony marks not just the start of the Games, but the celebration of unity, hard work, and the youthful spirit that drives Nigerian sports.
