NUGA 2025: UniUyo, UI Dominate Early Rounds in Scrabble Contest
The Scrabble competition at the 27th Nigerian University Games (NUGA) has reached an exciting stage, with the singles and doubles events concluded and the team event as well as the special Best Board medal still ongoing. The University of Uyo and the University of Ibadan are leading the medal table so far, following an intense series of tile battles that showcased top-class word power, strategic rack management, and tactical plays across both male and female categories.
Singles (Male) Abasido Bassey of the University of Uyo outplayed his opponents to clinch gold in the male singles, finishing with the highest cumulative spread after several rounds. His teammate, Prestige Archibong, took silver, while Amadi Gift of Rivers State University settled for bronze.
Singles (Female) In the female singles, Funmilola Kelani of the University of Ibadan emerged champion, displaying exceptional skill and consistency throughout the rounds. Ekajeh Talent of the University of Benin claimed silver, while Gowon Precious from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, earned the bronze medal.
Doubles (Male) The University of Benin duo, Oboro Alfred and Oboro Alexious, combined perfectly to secure gold in the doubles (male) event. Abasido Bassey and Prestige Archibong of UniUyo took silver, while Kingsley Enyi and Benjamin Onuh from the University of Ibadan claimed bronze.
Doubles (Female) In the female doubles, the University of Ibadan maintained its fine form as Funmilola Kelani paired with Barakat Malik to win gold. Ekajeh Talent and Ekajeh Excel of the University of Benin took silver, while Blessing Ola and Hauwa Abdullahi from the University of Jos won bronze.
Outstanding Players The University of Ibadanâs Funmilola Kelani emerged as the standout performer so far, with back-to-back gold medals in both singles and doubles. The University of Uyo has also impressed with two gold medals, positioning itself as a strong contender ahead of the team rounds. The University of Beninâs Ekajeh Talent also remains one of the most consistent players, with silver medals in both singles and doubles.
NUGA Scrabble Coordinator, Chief Olobatoke Aka, expressed satisfaction with the level of play and organisation.
âThe competition has been very engaging. The players have shown discipline, strategy, and sportsmanship. We are looking forward to an equally thrilling team event,â he said. The team rounds and the special Best Board medal event had not been concluded as of press time.
