NUGA 2025 Scientific Forum Advancing University Sports for National and Global Excellence
The Nigerian University Games Association NUGA successfully hosted the 2025 Scientific Forum Conference on 10th November, 2025, at the Aliyu Akwe Doma Auditorium, Faculty of Arts, University of Jos. The event, held as part of the 27th NUGA Games, convened sports administrators, academics, coaches, psychologists, and student-athletes to explore how innovation and research can enhance university sports and contribute to national development.
Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the strategic role of sports in fostering national growth, youth empowerment, and institutional development.
The lead paper was presented by Prof. Stephen Hamaflyeto, Professor of Sport Psychology at the University of Maiduguri, on Mental Resilience and Psychological Preparation for University Athletes. His presentation highlighted the critical importance of psychological support and performance sustainability in university sports.
Panel discussions and interactive sessions explored key themes including the integration of innovation and technology such as AI in sports, gender inclusion, mental and physical well-being, sustainable funding, and post-retirement management for sports professionals. The forum attracted participants from over forty universities, fostering vibrant dialogue and strengthening collaboration between academia and sports management.
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, Prof. Tanko Ishaya, alongside the NUGA Scientific Forum Committee led by Prof. Joshua Umeifekwem Chairman and Prof. Simon Kiyat Secretary, commended all contributors, the host university, and NUGA partners for their support.
The conference concluded by reaffirming the essential link between sports, education, and national development, calling for ongoing partnerships among universities, government, and the private sector to advance university sports excellence in Nigeria. The NUGA 2025 Scientific Forum stands as a landmark event, providing insights, strategies, and actionable recommendations that will guide the future of university sports in the country.
