Professor Bawa Chess And Scrabble Championship Held at ATBU

The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University ATBU, Bauchi, through the Office of the Director of Sports under the Students Union Government SUG, successfully hosted the Professor. Bawa Mohammed Chess and Scrabble Championship 2026 at the Auditorium, Yelwa Campus on the 13th and 14th of February 2026.

The championship brought together students across the university in a competitive display of intellect, strategy, and mental skill, as participants engaged in intense battles across both chess and scrabble. The event was designed to promote mind sports, encourage critical thinking, and foster healthy competition among students.

With strong participation and enthusiasm, the championship featured impressive performances, culminating in the emergence of outstanding winners across both categories. In the Scrabble category, Daewun Muhammad Abdulmukit claimed gold, Goodluck Sunday Ugboga secured silver, while Habila David took bronze. In the Chess category, Solomon Wudiri Simon emerged as gold medalist, Joseph Eniola Adeleke won silver, and Kira Ishaya Rejoice secured bronze.

Participants competed for prizes, including a 50,000 star prize, further adding to the excitement and competitive spirit of the event.

The championship was held in honour of Professor. Bawa Mohammed, a respected Professor and Chairman of the Sports Council at ATBU, NUGAs current President, former Vice President of the Nigeria Chess Federation, and a certified international chess trainer, recognises his contributions to sports development and intellectual competition.

Overall, the event highlighted ATBUs commitment to promoting both physical and intellectual sports, while creating opportunities for students to showcase their talents.
