Faculty of Education Emerges Overall Winner at UNIZIK VC Cup 2026
The Nnamdi Azikiwe University UNIZIK, Awka, successfully hosted its Vice Chancellors Cup 2026 from Monday, 16th February to Friday, 20th February 2026 across multiple venues, including the Bakassi Sports Complex. Organised by the Directorate of Sports, the inter faculty tournament featured competitions in all NUGA approved sporting events for both male and female categories, delivering vibrant participation, competitive action, and memorable moments across campus.
At the end of the tournament, the Faculty of Education emerged as overall champions, recording an outstanding medal haul of 25 gold, 22 silver, and 12 bronze medals, with dominant performances particularly in athletics and combat sports. The Faculty of Social Sciences secured second place with 11 gold, 9 silver, and 11 bronze medals, while the Faculty of Arts finished third with 8 gold, 7 silver, and 3 bronze medals.
Other faculties also recorded notable performances, with Agriculture placing fourth, followed by Health Sciences, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Medicine, Law, Basic Medical Sciences, Biosciences, Physical Sciences, Technical and Vocational Education, and Management Sciences. In total, 14 faculties participated in the tournament, reflecting strong campus wide engagement.
The competition featured a wide range of sporting categories, including ball games such as football, volleyball, handball, and basketball, racket and table sports like badminton and table tennis; mind sports including chess and scrabble, combat sports such as taekwondo, judo, and karate, as well as tennis and athletics, which recorded significant participation across both male and female categories.
In addition to the tournament, the university also hosted the UNIZIK Walk for Life 2026, a health and wellness initiative organised by the Directorate of Sports and hosted by the Faculty of Social Sciences. Held on Wednesday, 18th February 2026, participants moved from the Admin Block in a collective effort to promote active living, healthy habits, and overall well being within the university community.
