Nigerian Student Ambassador Accepted into Prestigious FISU Springboard Programme
A significant milestone has been recorded for Nigerian university sports as Kolawole Esther Anuoluwapo, the 2025 and 2026 FISU Student Ambassador representing Nigeria at the University of Ilorin, has been accepted into the prestigious FISU Springboard Programme. The highly competitive global initiative identifies and develops emerging sport leaders, connecting them with experienced professionals across the international university sports movement. Esthers selection reflects the growing contribution of Nigerian students within global sport leadership spaces.
Her acceptance builds on a series of initiatives she has championed within the University of Ilorin community. In collaboration with the University of Ilorin Student Union, Esther founded the UniIlorin Sport Medical Team, recognised as the first student led sport medicine team in a Nigerian university. The initiative has created practical opportunities for students while strengthening athlete welfare during sporting activities.
Under her leadership, students have gained hands on experience through deployments at the ongoing University of Ilorin League, while she also continues preparations for a large scale Sport Careers Seminar expected to engage between 4,000 and 5,000 students on opportunities within the sports industry. These initiatives reflect a commitment to creating pathways for learning, professional development, and participation beyond competition.
As part of the Springboard Programme, Esther will be mentored by Melissa Hartzell, Development Director for the 2029 FISU Summer World University Games in North Carolina, USA. Through this mentorship, she will gain exposure to international best practices in sport development, fundraising, event management, strategic planning, and stakeholder engagement from one of the professionals helping to deliver one of the worlds largest university sporting events.
Her acceptance is not only a personal achievement but also a positive reflection of the quality of leadership emerging from Nigerian universities. The experience, networks, and knowledge gained through the programme are expected to strengthen ongoing efforts in student development, athlete welfare, and sports administration, further highlighting the growing role of young Nigerians in shaping the future of university sports both locally and globally.
