University Sports Highlights Across Nigerian Campuses June 2026
University sports activities continued to gather momentum across the country as institutions launched new competitions, celebrated champions, and created fresh opportunities for student participation and talent development.
At the University of Port Harcourt UNIPORT, the UNIPORT Womens Super League officially kicked off at the Arena Field, marking another milestone in the universitys commitment to promoting womens football. The opening ceremony was flagged off by the Students Union Government Director of Sports, Comrade Bolarinwa David, alongside other SUG executives, setting the stage for an exciting season of competition. The university also commenced the VCs Cup 2026, with faculties competing in an international themed football tournament inspired by countries from around the world, adding a unique dimension to campus football.
At Obafemi Awolowo University OAU, the Freshmen Sports Fiesta 4.0 Male Football Tournament concluded after weeks of competition involving fourteen faculties. The Faculty of Social Sciences and the Faculty of Education progressed to the final, while the Faculty of Computer Science and the Faculty of Science competed for third place. The tournament showcased emerging football talent and strengthened participation among first-year students through healthy competition and campus engagement.
At Sule Lamido University, Kafin Hausa SLUK, the university successfully hosted the maiden edition of the SLUK Sports Festival, bringing together six faculties and the School of Preliminary and Continuing Education for four days of sporting activities. Competitions featured football, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, scrabble, chess, athletics, and other events, with outstanding teams and athletes receiving medals, trophies, and awards. During the closing ceremony, the Chairman of the University Sports Committee, Professor Engr. Nasir Farouk, presented an award of recognition to the Vice Chancellor in appreciation of his continued support for sports development within the institution.
At the University of Ilorin UNILORIN, JAD FC successfully defended their crown as champions of the UNILORIN League 8.0, completing an unbeaten campaign to retain the league title. Their remarkable consistency, resilience, and dominant performances throughout the season highlighted the growing competitiveness of university football and reinforced the league's reputation as a platform for developing student-athletes.
At the University of Uyo UNIUYO, preparations are underway for the Students Union Interclub Football Cup, a competition that allows students to represent and compete under the banners of some of the worlds biggest football clubs, including Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Barcelona, and Real Madrid. The initiative combines football, campus engagement, and friendly rivalry while creating another avenue for student participation in sports.
