University Sports Highlights Across Nigerian Campuses July 2026
University sports activities continued to expand across Nigerian campuses as institutions introduced new initiatives, celebrated competitive success, and strengthened opportunities for athlete development, campus engagement, and healthy living.
At the University of Ibadan UI, the university officially launched the University of Ibadan Sports Academy UISA, unveiled the academys official tracksuit, and announced plans to establish a standalone Faculty of Sports. The academy was inaugurated during a ceremony attended by the Vice Chancellor, senior university officials, members of the Sports Academy Planning Committee, the Secretary to the Oyo State Government, and other stakeholders. The proposed Faculty of Sports is expected to offer specialised academic programmes in sports and exercise science, coaching and performance science, sports management, sports medicine and rehabilitation, and sports technology and data analytics, further strengthening sports education, research, athlete development, and professional training within the institution.
At Nnamdi Azikiwe University UNIZIK, the universitys Mixed Volleyball Team emerged champions of the 2026 OJINAM Memorial Mixed Volleyball Tournament after completing an unbeaten campaign. Team UNIZIK defeated several university and club sides before overcoming Legacy Volleyball Club in the final to claim the title and a 350,000 cash prize. The victory highlighted the universitys continued progress in collegiate volleyball and provided valuable competitive preparation for athletes ahead of the forthcoming 28th NUGA Games in Calabar.
At the University of Uyo UNIUYO, preparations continued for the Inter Faculty Football Competition 2026, with faculties competing for campus football honours in both the male and female categories. The university also organised UNIUYO Fitness & Feast 2026, a fitness and wellness programme featuring aerobics, games, competitions, music, dance, brunch, and other recreational activities designed to encourage active lifestyles, student participation, and community engagement beyond competitive sports.
At Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University ATBU, Bauchi, the Students Union Government Directorate of Sports launched the KEEPFIT Running Club at the Gubi Campus to promote fitness and healthy living among students and staff. Scheduled to hold three times weekly, the initiative encourages members of the university community to build healthy habits, improve physical wellbeing, and strengthen campus sports culture ahead of upcoming university competitions.
Overall, these initiatives reflect the continued growth of university sports across Nigeria, with institutions investing in sports education, athlete development, competitive opportunities, wellness programmes, and grassroots participation while strengthening campus sporting culture and preparing student athletes for higher levels of competition.
